This Winged Nike was made to celebrate the victory at the battle of Sphactheria (in which a small contingent of Spartans surrendered to the Athenians in an unprecedented event) during the Peloponnesian Wars and it stands now @ the super Olympia Museum.This is a well-preserved cast of the battered and partial head of the Nike of Paionios. Preserved of the head in the original, as here, are the ears of the goddess, some of her wavy hair, and part of the headband she wears. The face and neck are missing in the original.
